An authentic ancient Greek silver hemidrachm coin from the Greek colony of Cherronesos 450-300 BC depicting a lion looking back over his shoulder is set in this classic Steven Battelle « split-spiral with jawan » ancient-inspired ring design. The coastal areas of Turkey were colonized by the Greeks in the 7th century BC. Cherronesos is thought to have been located in what is now the Gallipoli peninsula of Turkey. These coins were used throughout the Black Sea region in ancient times. The lion was not native in Greece, but was known there as a symbol of power and majesty.
